This
is an interactive map of Arts, Media and Entertainment Programs in
California at high schools, community colleges, California State
Universities and other institutions. It's a work in progress that began
about a year ago.
You can use this site to show locations of arts and media programs in
Education for any location in California. There are two ways to change
the Map's location. You can type a Zip Code or a County into the box
labeled "Enter a Zip Code Or County". Or you can click on the + and –
icons on the zoom slider at the upper left hand portion of the map to
zoom in our out.
You can retrieve information about any individual program by clicking
on a pin on the map. To see a list of all the programs shown on the map
at any time, click "See a list of Pins on this Map".
You can filter Education programs shown on the map (limit the display
of pins) by using the three drop down menus next to "Filter Programs
By:". To show only programs of a certain type, use the – Program Type –
dropdown and select an entry. To show only programs valid for a certain
grade level, use the – Grade Level – drop down. To show only programs
from a certain funding source, use the – Funding Source – drop down.
You can apply several filters in combination, and the site will only
show programs that match all criteria. Once filters are added, they
will appear above the map in blue. If you want to remove them (and show
more programs on the map), simply click on the filter that you would
like to remove.
The
site was created for a variety of reasons: to develop an inventory of
these programs so that educators could link to each other, regional
voluntary collaborations might be formed, potential industry partners
could find local schools, and students could explore their
post-secondary options. We are sure that users will find many other
possibilities.
This site was created by the California Department of Education Secondary, Post Secondary and Adult Leadership Division (click here
for CDE link) as part of their continuing efforts to roll-out the Arts,
Media and Entertainment Career Technical Education Standards and
Frameworks. Santa Monica College (http://academy.smc.edu) was the principal contractor with research provided by the Entertainment Economy Institute (www.entertainmentecon.org) and mapping and site design by Placebase, Inc. (www.placebase.com) Additional assistance was provided by the California Community Colleges Multimedia and Entertainment initiative (www.cccmei.net) and the California State University Media Arts Programs (www.mediaartsfestival.org and www.csusummerarts.org).
Program
information was supplied by educators themselves or assembled from
program websites or recent course catalogs. Email and telephone contact
helped expand the information. Data on school addresses and student
grade ranges was provided by the California Department of Education.
Leads identifying possible program assets for study came from
previously gathered lists of the following:
ACME Animation Participating Schools
California Regional Occupational Centers
California Community College Multimedia and Entertainment Initiative
California State University Media Arts Programs
Partnership Academies: Media and Communications
Partnership Academies: Visual and Performing Arts
Specialized Secondary Programs
Workplace Hollywood / Entertainment Economy Institute Provider Profile
CDE and the project's contractors are planning a series of regional
meetings around the state to engage faculty, administrators, counselors
and others in what we hope will be a continuing dialogue about Arts,
Media and Entertainment programs - both academic and career -
curriculum, best practices, and industry partnerships. If you are not
listed as a program contact, please email info@entertainmentecon.org and we'll add you to the listserv.
We
also intend to expand the database to include the Universities of
California that are not currently in the data, as well as
community-based organizations and private institutions as appropriate.
Email info@entertainmentecon.org
with your name, school and subject taught (if applicable) or any other
information that might be helpful to plug you in to our growing
community. If you are a professional in one of the industries, we
welcome your participation. We promise to make it as simple as possible.
